How to Calculate Discount
A discount is a reduction in the original price of a product or service, usually expressed as a percentage. The formulas you need are short:
- Amount saved = Original price × (Discount % / 100)
- Sale price = Original price − Amount saved
- Shortcut: Sale price = Original price × (1 − Discount / 100)
Worked example: a jacket priced at ₹2,499 has a 40% Black Friday discount. Amount saved = 2,499 × 0.40 = ₹999.60. Sale price = 2,499 − 999.60 = ₹1,499.40. The calculator above does this automatically for any price and any discount.
Reverse Discount: Finding the Original Price
Sometimes you see only the sale price and want to know whether the "60% off" tag is real. Use:
Original Price = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount / 100)
If a sale tag says ₹1,200 at 40% off, the claimed original is 1,200 / 0.60 = ₹2,000. If the brand's MRP card actually says ₹1,800, the "40% off" is closer to 33%.
Stacking Multiple Discounts
"50% off + extra 20% off at checkout" sounds like 70% off but is actually 60% off. Multiple discounts are applied sequentially, not added together:
- Original: ₹1,000
- After 50% off: ₹500
- Extra 20% off the ₹500: ₹400
- Effective discount: 60%, not 70%
Formula for two stacked discounts: Final price = Original × (1 − d1) × (1 − d2). Effective discount = 1 − (1 − d1) × (1 − d2).
Discount, GST, and Coupon Codes
In India, discounts are usually applied before GST. So if an item is ₹1,000 MRP, the seller subtracts the discount first, then adds GST on the discounted amount. Example:
- MRP: ₹1,000
- After 20% discount: ₹800
- GST 18%: ₹144
- Final invoice: ₹944
Coupon codes that say "FLAT ₹200 OFF" are subtracted as a fixed amount, not a percentage — much easier to track. Always check whether minimum order value or maximum discount caps apply.

Discount Calculator for Shoppers
During big sales like Amazon Great Indian Festival, Flipkart Big Billion Days, Myntra End of Reason Sale, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, brands often inflate the MRP and then "discount" it back to the regular price. Use this calculator + a price-history tool (like Keepa or Amazon Price Tracker) to verify the deal is real before buying. If the calculated original is far above the historical price, the discount is mostly cosmetic.
Discount Calculator for Sellers and Marketers
If you run a Shopify, WooCommerce, Etsy or Amazon store, model discounts before you launch a sale. A 30% discount looks attractive to customers, but if your margin is only 35%, you are left with 5% — and if the sale doubles your volume, you actually make less profit per hour spent fulfilling orders. Match the discount you offer to the margin you have, and consider tiered discounts (10% on ₹1,000, 15% on ₹2,000, 20% on ₹3,000) to lift the average order value rather than just slashing price.
